I am excited to share our new publication on people-centric restoration in npj Biodiversity. This paper, written along with Arun Agrawal, Ivan Bialey, Rohini Chaturvedi, Kyle Frankel Davis, Shalini Dhyani, Forrest Fleischman, Jonas Lechner, Harini Nagendra, Veena Srinivasan and Ruth DeFries, demonstrate a people-centric approach to help policymakers translate global restoration prioritization studies for application to a country-specific context and to identify different socio-environmental conditions restoration programs could consider when siting projects.
I am back in central India since last month to carry out data collection, both for continued monitoring of the restoration sites I studied for my PhD as well as for a new National Geographic funded project, Soundscapes and Stories.
As I continue to collect data, I have also met with local people around my field sites to share my recently published research. The photo below was taken in one of the restored sites, Chhichari. Basant Jhariya ji (right), a local from this village is pointing to his name in the acknowledgements. Pooja (centre) has the Hindi abstract for the Restoration Ecology publication held up (translation by Mr. Satish Kotian). Devendra Korche (left), one of the local co-authors on the paper, is holding a copy of the publication. Basant ji, along with other village members, have worked hard to restore their community forest by removing Lantana camara and allowing the land to naturally regenerate. Seeing the soundscapes results based on their restoration efforts was encouraging and exciting to folks in the landscape. Head over to State of the Planet to read their coverage of my latest publication on understanding the impact of restoration on fauna using acoustic technology.
My new paper on ecological restoration and soundscapes, Listening for Change: Quantifying the Impact of Ecological Restoration on Soundscapes in a Tropical Dry Forest, was recently covered by the news outlet Down To Earth. Read the entire article here.
I'm glad to have started the new year with a paper acceptance. My research on quantifying the impact of ecological restoration of a tropical dry forest using acoustics is out in the journal Restoration Ecology. Below is a photo of some of my field sites, where I will be in a few days to continue to collect data for further analysis. Check out the paper here!
